A Bit of Tucson Arizona History
The Gadsden Purchase of 1854 officially made Tucson part of the United States. Tucson was the capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877. Tucson’s heritage is a blend of Spanish, Mexican, Anglo-American and Native American.
The architecture of Downtown Tucson neighborhoods reflects this heritage. Adobe brick homes are found in many Tucson neighborhoods. Territorial, Southwest and Hacienda styles homes are scattered throughout the city. El Encanto is minutes from the U Of A and considered the first condo community in central Tucson.
Tucson’s growth was stimulated by two events of the 20th century. World War II found many airmen being trained as pilots and crews at nearby airbases. After the war, many wanted to return. And they did. Second, the invention of air conditioning.
The U of A was chartered in 1885. Many Central Tucson neighborhoods surround the University of Arizona. U of A athletic events are among the many activities throughout the year.
Another interesting place in Tucson is Fort Lowell Park. The U.S. Army built Fort Lowell in 1873 to protect the fledging city of Tucson against the Apaches. Today, the park features soccer fields, a swimming pool, ball fields, tennis courts, playground structures, and a duck pond.
