History of the Catalina Foothills
The Catalina Foothills has a unique development history in Tucson Arizona. Large lots, desert preservation, Spanish influenced architecture, and dramatic mountain views.
The Vision
Creating the Catalina Foothills began in the 1920s with John and Helen Murphey. They acquired land north of Tucson to create a unique desert residential community. Their plan was to preserve the natural land scape and sell large lots with privacy and views. They wanted to attract people from the East Coast to build their winter retreats in Tucson.
From Vision to Homes
To develop their vision, Murphey’s hired architect Josias Joesler.
He used Spanish Colonial Revival home styles and native materials to build homes. Materials included Burnt adobe bricks,
white stucco, red tile roofs and handcrafted details. His homes in Catalina Foothills Estates, are sought after today.
Mid-Century
When Joesler’s died in 1956 the Murphey’s hired architect Juan Worner Baz. His influence created the Catalina Foothills Estates Apartments and Catalina Townhouses. Both are now National Historic Districts. During the 1950s and 60s, many builders worked in the Foothills. They created Ranch style homes and Burnt adobe and red brick construction. This era added Territorial style architecture and mid-century modern homes to the area.
Expansion
As Tucson grew during the 1960’s and 80’s, the Foothills saw more development. Townhomes, Condos and Smaller upscale communities came about. This provided more accessibility while continuing the area’s upscale feel.
Becoming “Today”
Since the 1990s, the Foothills saw many high-end custom homes. Local architects include Rob Paulus, David Tyson, Kevin Howard and Judith Chafee. Gated communities, golf course neighborhoods, and resort adjacent developments also emerged. Thus, solidifying the Foothills as one of Tucson’s premier residential areas.
Santa Catalina Mountains
The Santa Catalina Mountain is a major factor in the area’s distinctive character. And while architects and builders create places to live, they use the mountains as a focal point. The mountains are also in the name – Catalina Foothills.
