Wisdom’s Cafe – Its Not Just For Breakfast Anymore

In 1944, Wisdom’s Cafe opened its doors along the old Nogales Highway south of Tubac. For 35 years the Wisdom family restaurant was a favorite place for residents of Nogales and Green Valley, AZ.

The opening of I-19 in 1979 caused a brief interruption to the business. But family members came to the rescue and reopened Wisdom’s in 1980.

Longevity in the restaurant business can be fleeting, if non-existent. But to survive in Tumacacori, AZ for over 70 years means the Wisdom family does it right.

Wisdom’s Cafe is 1500 feet north of the Tumacacori San Jose Mission in Tumacacori, AZ. That is 3 miles south of Tubac and 20 north of Nogales, AZ. Not exactly the cross roads of southern Arizona in 1944. But it served breakfast and had a raucous bar.

Howard Wisdom, the founder, was a cowboy and horseman. To show his skills, he built a roping arena next to the Cafe. It became a gathering spot for many rodeo champions. Cowboys came from Mexico and the United States to rope and ride. They would show off their skills and endurance both in the arena and the bar.

One of the specialties at Wisdom’s Cafe is their World Famous Fruit Burrito. Fruit Burrito? Hmm. This menu mainstay, as legend has it, was a kitchen accident. A tortilla with jam spread on it fell into hot cooking oil. Upon removing it from the oil, the cook decided to take a bite. And liked it.

The wisdom of cook was to not throw out the accident, but make it a menu special. Today, Fruit Burritos are a mainstay on the menu with different fruit flavors.

And if the Fruit Burrito isn’t enough of a reason to head to Wisdom’s cafe, the margaritas are. It is hard to believe a margarita can be this good. What makes it great? No clue, but they are. Some suggest the tequilla pour is very generous.

Caution! If you are the driver, one may be one to many.

The location near the San Jose Mission and the huge white chicken outside make Wisdom’s Cafe easy to find.

Wisdom’s Cafe opened a second location in Tubac, AZ. “Dos” features craft beers and wine on tap. The Dos menu is a collection of great Mexican dishes at reasonable prices. And home made Ice Cream to top off the meal.
