The town name comes from Edward and Walter Vail. Ranchers who migrated to the area in the late 1870’s.

Edward Vail owned the Vail Ranch. His brother Walter Vail owned the nearby Empire Ranch. The Empire Ranch is now part of the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area.
