Homeowners Insurance – Ordinance Coverage
If you have an older home, you need to have Ordinance or Law Coverage in your homeowner’s insurance policy.
Why?
When a home incurs insurable damage, repairs may need to meet updated building codes. This coverage helps pay for expenses meet the updated building codes.
Three Main Components of the coverage:
Demolition Coverage: Covers costs to tear down undamaged portions of a building to meet updated codes. |
Increased Cost of Construction: Covers added expenses to rebuild to new building codes. |
Loss of Value to Undamaged Portions: Helps offset financial losses when parts of a home are deemed non-compliant. |
Some homeowner’s policies include limited ordinance coverage in normal homeowner policies. But it may not be enough for repair to older or historic homes. You should contact your homeowners insurance agent for the specifics of your policy coverages.
