A Bit Of History
Pyramid Credit Union was launched as a mutual investment group in 1925. The first year proved successful and the interest earned was split among the founders. As the founders boasted of their good fortune, more interested individuals enrolled in the group.
Pyramid’s success made it a frontrunner of the credit union movement in the United States. Many of the charter members of Pyramid Credit Union used the experience to launch other credit unions in Tucson. Pyramid Credit Union began operation before credit unions were recognized or governed by the state.
In 1929, PCU received one of the state’s first charters to operate as a credit union. As word spread about the credit union, Pyramid’s membership grew.
World War II proved to be a difficult time for credit unions across the country. Many members joined the armed services and accounts being closed. Additionally, federal regulations limited loans which further hindering credit union operations.
The late 1940’s saw Pyramid Credit Union not only having survived the turmoil of World War II conditions, but once again prospering. The post war period proved a good time to attract additional postal employees as members.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Pyramid Credit Union focused on the needs of postal employees. To do this, branches were added and services expanded.
In early 2003, the members of Pyramid Credit Union approved changes to the by-laws to include men and women residing in areas near its branches. This furthered accelerated the growth of PCU. Today, there are well over 7,200 members being served by Pyramid Credit Union.
