Enter William Murphy from Flagstaff Arizona.
He lead the construction of a section of the Arizona Canal for the Arizona Canal Company. The section from New River to Granite Reef in 1885. When done, Murphy found himself deep in debt.
Murphy had decided to accept Arizona Canal Company stock, bonds and land, not cash for payment.
To resolve his lack of cash, Murphy created the Arizona Improvement Company. His thinking was to sell the land and water rights near the canal. To that end, Murphy named the land he intended to sell “Glendale”.
From that beginning, Glendale Arizona has grown along with Phoenix and surrounding areas.
Glendale hosted the 2015 Superbowl game and various MLB training camps in the spring.
