Hiring a moving company

Selecting a moving company can be an easy or difficult task depending on how many times you have moved. Like many other things, the first time is always the hardest.

The more times you have moved the more likely it is that you know the pitfalls and circumstances that make a move a good experience or something to "live through".

In addition to reviewing the costs of the move, if it is your money, and references that can be contacted, I strongly suggest one other thing to consider. Select a moving company in the city you are moving to. Yes, moving to. Why??

I have found, after 6 moves - to some I am still a rookie - that by selecting a moving company in the city you are moving to may lower your costs. Remember, the industry isn't regulated any more and depending on the time of the year and destination the company may not be as busy. Not busy means less revenue, usually not good for them, but good for you!

Also, I believe having the moving company in your destination city gives the mover more incentive to have a satisfied customer "in town" that will make a referral in the future.

Finally, if there are problems encountered with the move, you can visit the company's management by walking in and not have to resolve the matter "long distance". Does this provide more "leverage" to get the matter favorably resolved? May be or may be not, but I feel better about it.
